The whole workshop, just for your group.
Some occasions deserve the room to themselves. Our Private Shared Scone Making Workshop hands you the full 60-minute experience — four scones from scratch, bottomless English tea, aprons, guide, and takeaway scones — with no strangers at the next table. Same warmth as the public workshop, just your people.
We host private groups at De Hems Dutch Cafe Bar, 11 Macclesfield Street, right in the middle of Central London. It’s a proper old pub with a full bar downstairs — arrive early, grab a drink, then head up for the workshop. (Outside booze stays outside, but their bar is right there.)

How the hour actually goes
-
1Welcome & settle in
Aprons on, quick hello from your host, everyone gets a workstation. Enough time to grab a group photo before hands get floury. -
2Bake
Step by step, you mix, cut, and shape your four scones. No baking experience needed — the whole point is that a total beginner leaves with proper scones. -
3Tea & taste
While the scones are in the oven, we pour a proper English tea and settle the jam-first-or-cream-first debate the honest way — by trying both. -
4Certificate & takeaway
Warm scones out of the oven, one to eat then and there, the rest wrapped up for later. Certificate in hand, and out you go.
What guests say
Perfect team away-day. Everyone was laughing within 10 minutes and no one wanted to leave at the end.

Booked it for my sister’s hen do — the host was hilarious, the scones were delicious, and the pub downstairs sorted the rest of the afternoon.

Took the whole family, kids included. Genuinely one of the highlights of the London trip.

Questions groups actually ask
How many people can we book for?
Up to 18 people in one session. The private workshop is priced with a minimum based on 12 guests — smaller groups can still book, you just pay the minimum. If your group is bigger than 18, contact us and we’ll look at running back-to-back sessions.
Can we bring our own drinks?
Outside alcohol isn’t allowed in the workshop room. The good news: we’re inside De Hems Dutch Cafe Bar. The bar is right downstairs — grab a cocktail, a beer, or a glass of wine before you come up, and you’re welcome to bring it into the workshop. Perfect for hen dos and after-work bookings.
Can you cater to allergies, gluten-free or vegan diets?
Honest answer: no. Our scones contain gluten, dairy, eggs, and there is cross-contamination risk with nuts. We can’t currently offer gluten-free, vegan, or allergy-safe scones. If a guest has an allergy, please let us know in advance — but attendance is at their own responsibility, and they may prefer to sit in and enjoy the tea rather than eat the scones.
Are children welcome?
Yes — children ages 3–12 book at £25 each, and toddlers under 3 come free. It’s a hands-on activity that kids genuinely enjoy. Family birthday parties are one of the most common private bookings we run.
What if we need to cancel?
Full refunds up to 48 hours before the workshop. Within 48 hours we can’t refund. To cancel, email hello@sconeworkshop.com or call +44 7496 436996.
How far in advance should we book?
The earlier the better — private slots go fast on Fridays, Saturdays, and around the holidays. For hen dos and corporate groups we recommend at least 2–3 weeks lead time. For last-minute plans, check the calendar first — sometimes we can slot you in the same week.
Can we combine the workshop with lunch or drinks?
Yes, and we recommend it. De Hems has a full Dutch pub menu and a proper bar. Most groups make an afternoon of it — meet at the bar, do the workshop, then head back down for food and drinks. Just tell De Hems’ team when you book with us and they’ll usually hold a table.
Is the venue accessible?
The workshop is upstairs at De Hems, so step-free access is limited. If someone in your group has accessibility needs, email us before booking and we’ll work out whether we can accommodate — sometimes we can arrange a different setup.
